This is the sixth consecutive tournament in which Murray has qualified for the fourth round; in fact, the Scott may be aiming to become the first British citizen since 1936 to win a Grand Slam title. Murray came close last year; in 2008, the world no. 2 became the runner up at the US Open after losing against current world no. 1 Roger Federer. Dent, on the other hand, entered the tournament unseeded; the American player recently returned to professional tennis after spending two years recovering from multiple spinal surgeries. After winning two rounds early in the tournament before facing Murray, though, Dent appeared to have regained much of his skill. In spite of the Dent’s abilities and efforts, however, Murray was in control of the game. From the beginning of the match, the Scott was confident in his return service. He broke Dent’s serve in the first set and went on to win the set in 31 minutes after Dent’s return went wide. In the second set, Murray lost two break points in the first game but later, in the third and seventh games, only conceded three points on his serve and won the set 6-2. The third set was very similar to the second; the Scott only lost five points on his serve and managed incredible returns. Dent simply couldn’t handle the world no. 2’s shots. At the end of the decisive set, Murray claimed victory with another 6-2 score. During the entire match, the Scott only made 13 unforced errors, hit 29 winners and fired 7 aces; he also kept 88 percent of his opponent’s serve in play and hit 8 returning winners. Dent, on the other hand, only hit 2 aces, although he was averaging 19 in the first two games. After the match, Dent stated he was pleased with the improvement in his game, especially after his long hiatus. Dent also said that it was unbelievable to play against Murray and admitted that the Scot killed his serve on several occasions with his returning shot. “He doesn’t miss. He really doesn’t miss. I felt like I was serving well and he made it look like I was serving underhanded out there. It’s nothing but positive for me. This was a huge step in my progression. What am I going to take from it? I hate losing. I’m glad to be back, but I’m sorry I’m not sticking around,” said the American. On the other hand, Murray is satisfied with his performance against Dent and hopes to keep climbing in one of his favorite tournaments, at the same time aiming for his first Grand Slam title. He said he was focusing on changing his game to adapt to his opponents in each match, taking advantage of their weaknesses with his return shot. “I thought I returned really, really well tonight and managed to finish the match off well too,” the 22-year-old Murray said. “I’ve always liked playing against serve and volleyers. I used to practice a lot with my brother and he used to serve and volley when we were young and that probably helped me.” With this win, Andy Murray will now face 16th seed Marin Cilic in the fourth round of the tournament.
